In case you’ve already forgotten how popular Johnny Manziel was in college as the quarterback of the Texas A&M Aggie, you’re about to be reminded again.
According to auction house SCP Auctions, they are selling a game-used Manziel jersey that could fetch at least $100,000 — the highest price tag ever for a college football jersey. Up until now, the highest price fetched for a college football game-used jersey was $27,000 for Paul Hornung’s Notre Dame jersey.
According to SCP Auctions, the jersey on sale is the same one worn by Manziel in all six of his team’s home games at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas during the 2012 season — the year Manziel won the Heisman trophy.
Manziel autographed the jersey with a metallic silver pen and also printed his individual stats from his Heisman winning season.
As for who is consigning the item, the auction house would not say. However, they did state that the jersey is fully authentic after careful investigation and examination.
This isn’t the first time the owner has tried to auction the jersey. Back in May, the jersey was posted on eBay with the seller hoping to receiving a winning bid of $300,000.
“This is his only game-used jersey from his college career that has come to market,” said Dan Imler, the vice president of SCP Auctions. Imler believes that due to Manziel’s extreme popularity, the auction could be sold for at least $100,000.
“It has been a long time since we’ve seen a player as polarizing as Johnny Football,” Imler said. “He has got an electrifying personality and everyone is either rooting for or against him.”
The jersey will be on display this week at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland. The auction itself will occur online from Aug. 6 through Aug. 23.
Johnny Manziel may have moved on to bigger and better things in the NFL but his college career, albeit a short one, will never be forgotten. And you can’t put a price tag on that.
